In my experience with over 15 years in “handling” bed bug infestations I can its very ineffective just using salt and somewhat of a myth.
Is Salt Dangerous To Insects?
Yes, salt can be harmful to insects, including bed bugs, in high concentrations or if ingested. When applied directly to the bodies of insects, salt can cause them to become dehydrated and eventually die. However, salt is not an effective insecticide when used on its own because it is difficult to apply evenly and may not reach all insects.
In general, it is important to use caution when using any chemical or natural substance to control pests. It is a good idea to follow the label instructions and safety precautions when using any pest control product, including salt. It is also important to consider the potential environmental impacts of using any pest control method. If you are concerned about the safety of using salt or other chemicals to control pests, you may want to consider using alternative methods, such as traps, barriers, or natural predators.
There are better methods of killing bed bugs. However here’s why many think it is:
- Salt can dehydrate bed bugs: Salt absorbs moisture from the environment, including the moisture in the bodies of bed bugs. When applied directly to bed bugs, it can cause them to become dehydrated and eventually die.
- Salt can be difficult to apply evenly: In order for salt to be effective at killing bed bugs, it must be applied evenly and thoroughly. This can be difficult to do, especially if the bed bugs are hiding in cracks and crevices.
- Salt may not reach all bed bugs: Bed bugs can hide in many different areas, including behind walls and under floorboards. It can be difficult to apply salt to these areas, so some bed bugs may survive even if you use salt.
For these reasons, salt is best used as a supplementary method in combination with other methods, such as heat treatment or chemical insecticides. If you’re trying to get rid of bed bugs, it’s important to follow a comprehensive treatment plan that includes a variety of methods.
